[Damned] OOC: Powers and Restrictions
Jan. 1st, 2011 12:00 amAn Immortal
After drinking the elixir of immortality, Firo's "status of life" changed; he stopped aging and became unable to die by normal means. To define Baccano!'s particular brand of immortality: he can be cut, burned, maimed, shot, drowned, suffocated, decapitated, dismembered, etc., and all the injuries will disappear as if time had reversed itself, leaving no mark behind. If his blood is spilled, it wriggles and returns to the wound to be sucked back in and the flesh mended afterward. If part of his body were severed, it would follow after the blood and reattach itself. If he were to be 'killed', he would revive soon after. New kinds of injuries have a longer gap of time before the revival process begins, as the body is not yet used to repairing itself in that way, but the more he gets a specific injury in a specific place (such as one hand being cut off repeatedly), the less time it takes to repair. Some injuries by nature also take longer; in particular, an injury to the brain would take several minutes to be fixed.
Firo can, however, die (permanently) by a single method: a fellow immortal could 'eat' him by placing his right hand on Firo's head and thinking that he wants to eat (or 'wishing hard enough' for it). Firo's body would then be absorbed into the other immortal's through the right hand, and the immortal would gain any knowledge and skills that Firo had possessed. Having 'eaten' Szilard Quates, Firo technically possesses any knowledge that the elderly immortal had gained, but as he doesn't like accessing Szilard's memories, this knowledge is inconsequential.
As an immortal, Firo is literally unable to establish a false identity and he cannot use a false name when speaking with other immortals; this is one of the rules that had been set down by the 'demon' who first gave immortality to the alchemists aboard the ship Advena Avis. Firo can use a fake name only in 'temporary introductions' to non-immortals; otherwise, his body rejects the attempted use of the name. (However, based on his first meeting with Victor Talbot, it seems that an immortal can use a fake name if they're not the one to actually say it – Victor was introduced as "Alan Baker" by Bill Sullivan. It also seems that they are unable to use a fake name on any documentation, such as in signing or registering, to prevent the creation of a false identity in the world.)
A Camorrista
Firo is very skilled at knife-fighting; in The Rolling Bootlegs, it's stated that he was the best at knives among the 'younger generation' of the Martillo Family. He was taught the skill by Ronnie Schiatto, and he was the first to win a knife duel again Maiza (whose skill with a knife was the best out of all the people Firo knew) during a promotion ceremony. His combat abilities are not limited to knife-fighting, however; he has also learned some form of martial arts (possibly jujutsu) from Yaguruma, which he has demonstrated in executing various throws (such as one against Dallas's thugs).
It's stated that Firo's skills in fighting are due to his strength in "following movement with his excellent eyesight and broad field of vision," allowing him to pick up many minor details at once to help predict his opponent's next move. This skill was developed to its peak potential through Firo's work of monitoring the Family's casinos for signs of cheating by its patrons.
English is his primary language, and although it is never stated explicitly, it seems likely that he has at least a passing (verbal) proficiency in Italian due to the area of New York he grew up in, and then the one he lived in after that. By 2002 he's fluent in Japanese, but it's unclear when exactly he learned the language (Isaac and Miria threw some Japanese at him in The Slash, and it seems he understood only a few words); I will be assuming that he's picked up a little from Yaguruma so far, but is nowhere near even conversational in it.
In Landel's Institute
A much, much slower version of his healing is able to work in Landel's. Every injury—no matter how often he's gotten it—will be treated as new by his body: small injuries like scrapes and light bruises will take several minutes (a minimum of two rounds of posting) before they begin to repair themselves, moderate injuries would take longer (at least five rounds of posting, depending on severity and time lapse within the posts) before they begin to heal. Healing itself will also take at least two posts after the process has begun, and may take longer depending on the injury. Anything particularly severe (brain injuries, losing a limb) will not begin to heal until after a much longer time (at least ten rounds of posts) and cannot be fully repaired until morning—for example, a severed limb might reattach itself during the night by mending the bone and stopping the flow of fresh blood (any blood already spilled would be sluggish at returning), but the flesh would not be able to finish mending itself unless a significant amount of time has passed (such as receiving the injury at the beginning of a very busy night thread – at least 50 total posts would have to be exchanged before the injury could finish healing itself during night). Likewise, he wouldn't recover from anything fatal until morning.
Death would also leave him feeling tired and generally unwell for the next 24 hours after waking. If he were to die multiple times, it would begin to actually take longer to recover from it instead of the other way around—reviving by breakfast would be the minimum recovery time for the first death; by second shift for the second death; by lunch the third death; and so on... with an upper limit of breakfast the following day (so that one full day has passed with him dead) to avoid making him unplayable if he starts dying too much.
Due to the visual aspect of his body reversing damage, his healing will not function at all during the day. In the case of death, his injuries would appear healed by morning even if he is still dead at that time.
Finally, while not exactly a power, he will be able to use his "real name" around other immortals, and be able to sign with it as well – just to give an extra twist to the Institute's claim if Firo decides to try it.
